As a culinary legacy in the heart of LA’s food scene, Bastide will always be known as the brainchild of America’s preeminent commercial director of the world; Joe Pytka. With special credits of directing The Beatles’ last video, honoring John Lennon posthumously: “Free as a Bird”.
Joe Pytka is unquestionably a visionary for all things experiential . . . Bastide was just another artistic expression for Joe. Executive Chef Walter Manske asked Joe if he can somehow (in the petite restaurant) get some more wine storage to compliment the ancient wines from the existing wine cellar; sporting Chateau d’Yquem from 1811 (yes, eighteen eleven) to present, including the 1847 Chateau d’Yquem estimated at well over one hundred thousand dollars for a single .750ml bottle.
After meeting Joe’s expectations for the 928 bottle utilitarian wine cellar located in a space that was previously used as a serving side-station in the restaurant. Joe commissioned Paul LaRussa, chief designer of Premier Cru Wine Cellars, to enhance the existing wine cellar with classic, old and rare, ancient wines; including the 1847 Chateau d’Yquem. Needless to say, It was an honor and privilege for Paul LaRussa to be selected by one of America’s greatest and most passionate wine collectors, a true Francophile and restaurateur; Joe Pytka. The project went very well the newly enhanced wine cellar design and custom wood wine racks, which cradled Madeira wines from the 1700’s were kept nicely in a fine wine cellar showcased by Premier Cru Wine Cellars design and construction.
